Almost ready...

My guess, you were recommending an LGA 2011-v3 build, in a situation (gaming computer) where it’s rarely or never needed. It’s like suggesting to somebody that wants an inexpensive gaming rig to go buy a mac

We tend to remove those posts so that an inexperienced user doesn’t come along and think it’s good advice. We also do the same thing with AMD CPU recommendations.

I did not want to create an extra new thread for my question and I think this topic fits.

I would like to upgrade my cpu and I m thinking about an I7 6700K or the new I7 6800K on X99 chipset.

The 2 configurations would be like following :

I7 6700K
ASUS Maximus VIII Hero
Corsair Vengeance LPX ddr4 2x8GB
Total costs : approx. 680 CHF

or

I7 6800K
ASUS X99A — or better advice ?
Corsair Vengeance LPX ddr4 2x8GB, possibility to add more later if needed.
Total costs : approx. 777 CHF

An I7 5820K is not worth. It costs 451 CHF where the new I7 6800K costs 460 CHF.

A new graphic card (GTX 1070) and a new 4K monitor will come later. Actually I m running on 2 monitors. One HP LP2475W (1900x1200) and a Samsung C226CW (1680x1050).

My actual system :

AMD PhII X4 965 OC @ 4GHz
Noctua NH-D14
2x 4GB DDR3 Corsair @1600MHz
ASUS M4A89TD Pro
ASUS R9 280X DC2
Samsung 850 SSD Evo
WD Black Sata III 7200rpm 1TB

Im looking mostly for a gaming PC but capable to run more softwares simultaneously without loosing performance, for the next 4-5 years.

Of course I m asking here so I m open for suggestions.

X99 builds are only needed if you’re running 3 or more video cards, or have some other high performance task that requires the extra bus bandwidth - lots of virtual machines, animation rendering or 8k still image editing.

Otherwise a Z170 build is plenty fast… If you’re buying a 4k monitor you’ll need a GTX 1080 to get 50-55 fps on modern titles. The 1070 just isn’t able to push 4K well enough.

Truth is I’d save the money and drop down to the 6600K and a 1070 (or even maybe a 1060) and stick with 1080p monitors. Aim for the computer to last 2 to 3 years, the repeat you’ll end up with a much better performing solution for the next 5 years for less money.

Since I’m Canadian, and also looking to get a new gaming Rig, I thought I would add
Amazon Canada Links for JayC’s list above:
Intel i7-6700K
ASUS Z170-K
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 16GB
Samsung 850 EVO M.2 500GB
Corsair CS 650W Power Supply
Corsair Air 540 Case
Corsair H115i
Seagate 2TB SSHD
Artic Silver 5 Thermal Paste

Total Cost tonight on Amazon: $2,565.05 CAD (1977.99 USD)

So my PC question…

Background
I’m currently playing at 1440p, (DELL U2711 monitor). There’s a good chance I might try Vive or Rift at some point in the next year, and it’s time for a new PC anyway…

GPU I’m looking at is a 1070, with a 6500K.

I’m not really planning on SLI at this time. and pretty happy with my monitor so no Freesync/Gsync plans currently.

If I go with a mITX board / case (looking at Fractal Define Nano S… possibly with an AIO 240 sized water cooler… other than no option for SLI in the future due to a single PCI-e slot, are there any other major drawbacks?

I want a quiet system, budget $2000 CAD or less (1500 US), then as much performance as I can get (hence the 6500k). I’m also pretty space constrained at the moment, so mATX or mITX is appealing. No windowed cases, LED lights etc either.

I’ve never had more than a single GPU, SSD, and HD in my PC either, so going smaller doesn’t seem to pose any constraints to my likely usages.

Current system
i5-2500K
8GB Ram
GTX680
128GB SSD
1TB HD
Fractal Design R3 Case

TLDR; Other than losing SLI potential, and only 2 DDR4 slots, any other major reasons not to go mITX?

mITX can’t overclock as well. Also you probably mean a 6600K isn’t the 6500 doesn’t come in a K version.

The Fractal Design cases are fantastic, I have two myself (Define R4 for one of my desktops and a Mini for my server) and I love them both. I used a Corsair 400D for my game PC because Fractal Design didn’t seem to offer a case (at the time) for water cooling. The insulation is excellent and the Define series truly are quiet cases.

Errmm… i have an unused Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive i don’t need if anyone wants to buy it?
£120 ex P+P.

Got it for my mac before checking that the mac takes an M.2
